Take small steps to update your website over time

“A website is a living, breathing brand tool that needs to be cared for over time.”
– Gavin Cooper

Everybody has a website today. But when you’re maintaining a business, the upkeep of your website can go by the wayside. And, who would blame you? WordPress is updating more often, plugins need to updated, Christmas always comes too soon and making style changes always get pushed to the bottom of the priority list.

But, just like a home, websites need consistent care and maintenance in order to stay relevant and fresh before your viewer’s eyes. A website that lacks maintenance can make your website vulnerable to security threats and malfunctioning components.

Here are some quick tips to keep your website looking fresh and running smoothly:

Update your visual content

  • Change the slider images every quarter. If you have a slider on your homepage, keep the pictures updated every quarter or in correspondence with events unique to your company. Even that small change will help your clientele know that they can get timely information for your website.
  • Do an audit of your blog and page images. Go through your website and update the images on your most popular web pages and posts. You can add text over the images or just update them with new and improved images.
  • Make sure your logos are up to date. If you have recently updated your logos or brand elements, make sure that those changes are reflected throughout the website. Be sure to not leave the typeface off the table. Update the fonts to reflect your brand style.

Update your content

  • Clean up your homepage copy. Review your copy at least twice a year to make sure that everything is still relevant and up to date.
  • Update your popular blogs. Be sure to make sure your blogs are up to date. Many times, information can change and become outdated. Keep people coming back to your useful blogs with updated content.
  • Improve your SEO. If it’s been a while since your SEO has been checked, then it would be good to make sure that each page has proper keywords, metadata, and alternate image text.

Update your plugins and security options

  • Make sure your CMS is up to date. If your site is built on WordPress, then you have seen a lot of updates lately. As much as a pain as they can be, the updates are designed to keep your website safe and secure.
  • Ensure that you have the latest versions of your plugins. Your plugins should be updated with your CMS. If they are out of date, then conflicts can occur causing your website code to be broken and appear disjointed on the live version.
  • Backup your site on a regular basis. Even the best-laid plans need to be secured with a good backup. Anything can happen, and you could lose your website in a heartbeat. You can protect your information by making sure that your content is backed up on a regular. Setup a backup program to keep regular backups on your website.

These are all simple changes that you can incorporate over time to ensure that your website is looking great and up to date!
